Pygmy hippos · Côte d’Ivoire
A message from the rainforest
A notification when a trap closes, to reduce checks and disturbance nearby. Tested in Côte d’Ivoire; easier deployment and link verification are next steps.

From trap to basecamp
Three nodes form the notification route.
- 01
Trigger node
At the trap
- 02
Relay node
Forwards the notification
- 03
Basecamp node
Receives the notification
Fewer checks around the trap
IBREAM previously had to inspect traps in person. Animals could remain trapped too long, or people had to stay nearby long enough to disturb the process. The notification system aims to tell researchers remotely when a trap closes so they can respond.
Existing nodes, our own integration
We used Heltec ESP nodes and Meshtastic software. We developed the concept, enclosure and configuration and selected and connected the reed sensor through a small supporting PCB. A trigger node by the trap sends a notification through a relay to basecamp.
Field testing and further improvements
The system has been tested in Côte d’Ivoire. Changes are needed to simplify deployment and confirm that the link is working during installation. Improving field usability is the next step; the field test does not mean development is complete.
