Robinson Counter
Robinson Counter: from sensor to connected product
Counts and travel direction for decision-making and accountability. Developed with AbelLeisure; Axitec manufactures the poles.
Organisations involved

Counting without mains power
Remote access to measurements
Designed for outdoor use
Demonstrating route use
Axionomic approached us about a counter in PWN’s woodland. AbelLeisure was developing a similar solution and wanted to demonstrate that the walking routes it creates were well used. This need formed the basis for developing the Robinson Counter together.
The complete technical development
We developed the PCB, enclosure, software, backend, frontend and analysis, including the API and NDW integration. AbelLeisure’s predecessor used lidar, PIR and LoRa. The G4 evolved to two lidar sensors at 1000 Hz and LTE-M through an nRF9151. Axitec manufactures the poles.
Counts for decisions and accountability
The current G4 provides counts, travel direction and speed. Passages are classified as pedestrians, cyclists or cars based on speed. It is supplied to Dunea, Waternet, NDW and municipalities, among others, and sold by POL Heteren. Additional information including PIR counts, flux, temperature and battery and solar-panel voltage helps us monitor operation. Counts support decision-making and accountability.
From counts to useful insight
Counts are available in the Robinson Viewer dashboard. Data is transmitted hourly by default; users can create reports, export data and connect their systems through an API. Data is stored in the Netherlands.
Installation without road-surface loops
The counter operates without induction loops in the road surface. This suits temporary counts and locations where altering the road surface is undesirable.
